What is Methoxphenidine?

Methoxphenidine, also known as MXP, is a dissociative compound of the diarylethylamine family of chemicals. Much like other, more well-known dissociatives, such as Ketamine and Phencyclidine (PCP), it is a potent NMDA receptor antagonist. MXP is structurally similar to both Dephenidine and Ephenidine, both of which are often sold as an alternative to MXP in places where it is illegal.

There is minimal medical literature on Methoxphenidine, and most accounts of its effects, both physiological and psychological, come from anecdotal reports. These reports indicate that MXP is a potent dissociative, but does differ noticeably in its effects compared to Ketamine and MXE.

The chemical structure of MXP contains a substituted phenethylamine skeleton with an added phenyl ring. Like other drugs of the same class, it has a high affinity for NMDA receptors and acts as a receptor antagonist. For normal brain function, NMDA must remain open to allow electronic impulses moving up the spinal column to communicate with the brain. When MXP or another dissociative binds to the NMDA receptor, communication between the brain and spine is heavily disrupted, causing the substance’s psychological and physiological effects.

Effects and possible warnings of Methoxphenidine

Reduced motor function: To remain open, other neurotransmitters such as GABA must bind to the NMDA receptor sites. Because of its high affinity, MXP outcompetes these chemicals, resulting in closed NMDA channels. This closure has a significant effect on one’s motor skills, and at high doses may even render them incapable of moving.

Depersonalization: Researcher reports suggest that MXP doesn’t have the same “k-holing” potential as other dissociatives, although some reports seem to contradict this. Because of the experimental nature of the compound, it can be difficult to say for sure. However, as with all chemicals of this class, some level of depersonalization can be expected.

Physical Euphoria: The ‘body high’ of MXP has been described as being soft and pleasant, with a pleasing vibrating sensation throughout the body.

Cognitive Euphoria: Researchers have described the cognitive effects of MXP as being much less confusing and disorientating than other dissociatives. Most anecdotal reports seem to suggest that MXP leaves users surprisingly clear-headed compared to other substances of the same family such as Ketamine and MXE.

Psychosis: Although rare, cases of psychosis at high doses have been reported.

Hallucinations: At higher doses, MXP can produce visual and auditory hallucinations similar to those one would experience on psychedelics. User reports indicate that the strength of the hallucinations are lower than what one would expect to experience on a similar dose of Ketamine.

Memory Loss: NMDA channels also play a role in the formation of memory, although this mechanism is still not fully understood. Because of how MXP acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, memory loss and amnesia can occur and have often been reported at higher doses.
