Wow this is such a big bag. A terrific price for the amount of bonito flakes you get. I use them in dashi stock and they are delicious. I will also admit that from time to time I get a pinch or two out and snack on them. These are NOT salted. This is just dried, smoked fish. When you open the bag it smells like fishy smoky heaven. I’m really enjoying making stock with these. Will definitely buy again.

Comes as a large resealable bag of bonito flakes. With Kombu and water, it works well to make a beautiful dashi that is clear and flavorful. So far I have used the dashi to make miso soup and have been very happy with the results.

These are delicious bonito flakes—much better than another brand I purchased in a larger-sized bag recently. This brand seems to have quite a bit thinner shavings, so the flakes melt in your mouth. I also prefer the rich taste as they seem a little more fresh and flavorful vs the dry, fishy taste the other brand left in my mouth. If you are buying bonito for your cat, only, however—I’d recommend against this brand as you can get a better bargain with a larger bag of another brand and since this is so delicately shaved, the flakes can almost disintegrate into a million little particles if your cat eats these as enthusiastically as mine does.

I used this mixed with some soy sauce to make onigiri. Flavor was great, not as fishy as I initially anticipated. I didn’t realize this is what’s used to make dashi broth. I had bought dashi bullion without realizing this could be used for dual purpose. I also don’t read japanese so the instructions were kind of useless but came with pictures. (hooray for youtube and miso recipes). Definitely a great purchase.

I bought these as a cheaper alternative to the expensive freeze dried chicken treats I feed my diabetic cat. Sadly diabetic cats can’t eat most cat treats, so it was breaking my wallet having to buy special ones.

Then I found out about bonito flakes, what a life saver! I don’t care for the flavor myself, but they seemed very fresh and arrived undamaged in great packaging. The shavings are nice and big and I’m sure they would be great in a recipe.

If you’re buying these for cat treats like me, don’t give up if your cat seems disinterested in them at first. My cat turned her nose up at these several times until I placed one in her mouth a few times so that she realized it was fish. I believe the paper like texture confused her until she realized that it rehydrates in your mouth! Now she loves them. Your kitty may need some convincing. I prefer these over freeze dried treats as they are much cheaper and the bag you get is huge. Great quality flakes.

Had never used this stuff before but it seems to be of good quality. It definitely flavors up soups (including homemade Miso soup). In addition, my girlfriend’s cat LOVES this stuff which is pretty cool because it’s probably healthier than the average store bought treats. My dog likes it too hehe.

I have wanted to try bonito flakes for years, seeing them on cooking shows and food documentaries. I couldn’t have been more amazed at how these taste. I haven’t been able to eat smoked fishes in many yrs, because the softer versions, I think, retain far too much of the salt and other curing products, and I would have a horrible reactions physically. I got these bonito flakes, and tasted one flake, and was reminded of smoked salmon. I made a cream cheese and bonito flake mixture and it reminds me of cream cheese and lox but I don’t have the bad reaction, I think because its dried. Still packs an amazing umami smoky delicate fish flavor punch, but if you ask me much healthier. I am not blowing up like a “fish” from the cures and massive salt from softer smoke cured fish typical in USA. This is way cheaper and will go much farther than any $$$ smoked salmon. I cant wait to try it in other things too.

Although it has another name, this bag is identical to another Japanese brand of shaved bonito flakes. There is only a few cents difference in the price. I have ordered both and examined the bags closely. Everything is written in Japanese so I cannot read what the bags say, but the bags appear identical. The flakes are the same excellent quality. You can look for my review of the other bags of bonito and order whichever is the least expensive. They are both so reasonably priced.
